Understanding Assets You Cannot See

This post was inspired by a recent article in Time Magazine, "What Lies Beneath" http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1968094,00.html

Underground Public Infrastructure is designed to last 50 - 100 years or more. The problem is that the older it is today, the less likely we are to know what and where it is. Most of it was installed with the without the thought that it may need to be maintained in the future.

This creates a diffcult issues when managing and maintaing our underground public water, sewer, electric and cables systems. Now comes a new technology from Geospatial Corp. (http://www.geospatialcorporation.com/) named the Smart Probe. This device allows you accurately identify the location and map a 3D representation of critical pipe and cable assets.

Where the real value comes in is tying this GIS related data to a capable Enterprise Asset Management system. When looking for a "capable" system to handle the relevant GIS data, organizations should consider a system built with Public Infrastructure in mind. These systems should have:

1. Linear Asset Management features. Pipes are not manufacturing facilities, they need to be viewed and segmented at certain start and end points.

2. GIS integration and embedded map capabilities within the EAM System. If you can't use this fantastic data created by Geospatial Corp. to maintain the infrastructure, then whats the point?

3. Mobility for Field Worker. Put the information at the point of performance, so the maintenance and engineering workforce is working on the right pipe at the right point at the right time.

More and more ever year, intelligent information is being brought in to Asset Intensive industries. The organizations that take advanatage of this information in the right way will see more effiecient operations and happy customers!
